Think of The French Cellar as an exercise in uncorking surprises of the vino variety. Founded by Frenchmen Vincent Morello and Eric Joubert, The French Cellar takes an exploratory approach to wine discovery by delivering two bottles of wine to your doorstep each month. No, you don’t get to choose. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The selection of wines is curated by Nicolas Rebut, a sommelier and wine consultant who has worked the floor of three-Michelin starred restaurants the likes of Le Meurice and Le Louis XV for the past 16 years. Take it from the nose who knows, especially one who ventures from vineyard to vineyard across France to taste the vintages himself instead of relying on the 100-point scale. His intimate relationship with winemakers also means that the wines he secures for The French Cellar go straight from the winemaker’s cellar to The French Cellar and thereafter, your doorstep. The monthly wine subscriptions are priced from $79 to $959 a month, and range from beautiful wines from young, emerging winemakers to exceptional vintages from prestigious vineyards. Think a 1990 Chateau d’Yquem or even a Château Léoville Las Cases, Saint Julien Grand Cru Classé, 1990. Enjoy a particular selection? You can reorder it at a discounted price. Each delivery of wines is accompanied by wine tasting notes, suggestions for food pairings, and background information on the estate and winemaker — information you won’t necessarily get off the label.
