Merlot is a dark blue-coloured wine grape variety, it is the most widely planted red wine variety in France.
Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot is one of the primary grapes used in Bordeaux wine. It is the predominant variety in most wines from Saint-Emilion and Pomerol.
