2. The region is well known for its Merlot, which is some of the finest produced in the world.

3. In terms of terroir, what differentiates Pomerol from other Bordeaux regions is the high blue clay content in its soil. In places like Petrus’s vineyard, the clay content is possibly the most concentrated anywhere in Bordeaux.

4. This clay terrain is what nurtures the renowned Merlot produced by Pomerol. Other regional offerings include Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Pomerol wines are some of the most sought after in the world.

5. With a population below 1000, and boasting less than three square miles in area, Pomerol is the smallest of all the major Bordeaux wine producing appellations

6. For all its success, the history of Pomerol is relatively short. The region didn’t enter into prominence until after World War II, when chateaux such as Petrus began to be recognized for their excellence.

7. Breaking away from the tradition of other Bordeaux regions, Pomerol has no official wine ranking or classification. Following World War II, they were offered classification by Bordeaux, but turned it down.

8. Growers used to produce white Bordeaux wine in Pomerol until some time in the 19th century.

9. Merlot didn’t become the dominant grape in many of the best Pomerol vineyards until after the phylloxera epidemic of the mid-19th century.
