Jan 01, 2018
The Rhône is generally divided into two sub-regions, the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône.

Only Syrah (Shiraz) is used in Northern Rhone for red wines. Viognier by itself is used for white wines from Condrieu and Château-Grillet. Marsanne and Roussanne are used for the whites from Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, Saint Joseph, and Saint Péray.

In the Southern Rhône a large variety of grapes is permitted. These include: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsaut for reds; Grenache Blanc, Picpoul, Roussanne and Marsanne for whites.

Two Rhone wines have been selected in The Vineyard Gems in October 2013: Crozes-Hermitage from Domaine de la Ville Rouge, 2011 (Rhone Valley – North) and Cairanne, from Domaine Marcel Richaud, 2011 (Rhone Valley – South).
